WIWTW #28

But first...

Some News (That I Actually Care About)

  • So, Christoph Waltz is pretty eager to be in more James Bond movies. it seems. He's apparently signed on for two more movies with the condition that Daniel Craig returns. @Mirror
  • Box office report: Star Wars: The Force Awakens continued its ascent to the top, passing Jurassic World and Titanic in its quest for the box office crown. It's currently sitting at $740.4 million domestically. The top dog? That would be Avatar with $760.5 million which is well within reach. The real challenge will be to best the $2.8 billion that Avatar earned globally. Besides Star Wars, Daddy's Home earned a strong $29 million in its second week and The Hateful Eight made $16.2 million in its first week of wide release which isn't quite as good as Tarantino's past movies. For comparison's sake, Django Unchained managed $30.1 million and Inglorious Basterds made $38 million.
  • I'll tell you, I didn't think that the first XXX was much of a movie. The sequel with Ice Cube? The less that's said, the better. But XXX: The Return of Xander Cage is shaping up to be pretty interesting with Vin Diesel returning and Jet Li as well as Tony Jaa joining him. @CinemaBlend
  • Here's an ironic one: funding for The Wolf of Wall Street is part of a current investigation into corruption in Malaysia. @Wall Street Journal
  • Disney CEO Bob Iger has officially stated that there will be another Indiana Jones movie. Done right, I have no doubts that a 73-year old Harrison Ford could handle Indy duty. @ABC News
Video of the week: You'd think that it's a joke, but I assure you, Tiptoes is not.

 A Christmas Story 2 (2012)

Rating: 3.5/10

What is it: A pointless and unwanted sequel to an American Christmas classic
What's good: Daniel Stern has a moment or two
What's bad: Fails miserably in recapturing the nostalgia of the original, main actor is irritating, horrid narration

December 28th

John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Together (1979): Best Movie of the Week Award

Rating: 7.5/10

What is it: Like the title says, it's the Muppets and John Denver in a Christmas special
What's good: The usual Muppets magic, John Denver is clearly enjoying himself
What's bad: Not much of a plot, but doesn't really need one either

December 29th

Peace on Earth (1939)

Rating: 7/10

What is it: A bleak "what if" of humanity's constant warfare
What's good: Impressive animation, a message that still rings true today
What's bad: Definitely falls on the preachy side of things

December 30th

Christmas with Holly (2012)

Rating: 4/10

What is it: An ABC/Hallmark Christmas movie with fairies, a dead mother and a girl who doesn't speak
What's good: Adult actors are relatively good, story is almost OK
What's bad: Attempts at humour fail every time, cheesy to the max, uses a tired rom-com toolbox

Santa Baby (2006)

Rating: 3.5/10

What is it: An ABC Family Christmas movie with more botox than actual Christmas spirit
What's good: Grasping for straws here, but story is kind of different?
What's bad: Never funny or charming, unlikable main character, romance scenes that are beyond lame

December 31st

Pluto's Christmas Tree (1952)

Rating: 7.5/10

What is it: Pluto is the star of this Disney short which also includes Chip 'n Dale
What's good: Good animation that's gorgeously rich in colour, heartwarming finish
What's bad: Transitions a bit too speedily to the resolution

January 1st

Santa Baby 2: Christmas Maybe (2009): Worst Movie of the Week Award

Rating: 3/10

What is it: A sequel to Santa Baby which had to replace several of the supporting characters
What's good: /
What's bad: Does everything the first one does but worse, it's as if Mary Claus didn't learn anything from the first movie

January 2nd

Four Rooms (1995)

Rating: 6.5/10

What is it: A movie that ties together four different "episodes," directed by four different directors
What's good: Final two stories are the strongest, doesn't take itself seriously, loads of talent
What's bad: First two stories are pretty uneven, not as funny as it could've been overall
