WIWTW #2

Gotta say, I had a great week from a movie watching perspective which included a couple of the stronger films of 2014 plus a few older classics. Credit for that goes to my girlfriend who is probably sick and tired of my typical choices which prompted her to go out of her way to choose some quality titles. Hey, at least I balanced things out with the mother of all superhero movies, Batman & Robin right? I got a job to do after all.

Number of movies watched this week: 8

Average rating: 7.25

June 21st

The Yankee Doodle Mouse (1945)

Rating: 7/10

What is it: A wartime themed Tom & Jerry cartoon and winner of the Academy Award for Best Animated Short that year
What's good: Cleverly works in references to WWII, includes some good cat vs. mouse slapstick humour
What's bad: The slapstick gets a bit repetitive honestly.

June 22nd

Mouse Trouble (1944)

Rating: 7.5/10

What is it: Another Tom & Jerry short that also won in its category
What's good: More good cat vs. mouse slapstick
What's bad: Still slightly repetitive if less so than The Yankee Doodle Mouse.

June 23rd

Whiplash: Picture this but with more blood.

Whiplash (2014)

Rating: 8.5/10

What is it: A dramatic music film that performs magnificently
What's good: Strong performances, great music and an unforgettable/focused story
What's bad: Be my guest

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

Rating: 8/10

What is it: It's what you get when you combine X2 with X-Men: First Class with time-traveling
What's good: Surprisingly emotional, action-packed and funny when it needs to be. Balances all its characters extremely well.
What's bad: Cuts Rogue to a simple cameo

June 24th

The Theory of Everything (2014)

Rating: 7.5/10

What is it: A Stephen Hawking/Jane Hawking biopic.
What's good: Great performances from Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones.
What's bad: Can't help but feel like the storyline is a bit formulaic

June 25th

Worst Movie of the Week Award

(in the "Was There Ever Any Doubt Category?")

Batman & Robin (1997)

Rating: 2.5/10

What is it: A historically bad superhero movie that killed off Batman for 8 years.
What's good: Ice puns everywhere
What's bad: Goes out of its way to focus on merchandising opportunities, horribly written dialogue, treats its characters with eye-watering disdain and the list goes on.

June 26th

Best Movie of the Week Award

Vertigo (1958)

Rating: 9/10

What is it: Said to be Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece. Most recently considered to be the greatest movie ever made in some circles.
What's good: Great story, masterfully crafted and depending on who you ask ends on a spectacular note
What's bad: Puh-leeze!

June 27th

Quiet Please! (1945)

Rating: 8/10

What is it: A Tom & Jerry Cartoon that continues MGM's winning streak at the Academy Awards.
What's good: Finds a way to be more varied and consistently amusing than its two predecessors
What's bad: Nothing much, definitely the best Tom & Jerry cartoon I've seen so far
