Review: 11/11/11 (2011)

I'm kind of curious as to why The Asylum decided to go ahead with this "mockbuster" of 11/11/11. Was Darren Lynn Bousman's 11-11-11 really making that much noise before its release? Bousman is known as the "director of Saw II-IV" so I guess that does count for something. With a title that's so similar, 11/11/11 also has some real potential to trick unwary movie watchers who are looking for 11-11-11. At the time of writing this even Wikipedia is confused about this film, saying that it made almost $6 million at the box office with a citation from the Box Office Mojo entry for 11-11-11.

Anyway, I think I may have some sort of sick fascination with watching The Asylum's crap. I get to watch what is usually some big production and then I can look forward to a cheap copycat movie that never fails to astound. Astound in the sense that you wonder how anyone could be willing to take part in a production like this. Like really, how does it feel to know that you are in what will be a certifiably bad movie? I wish I knew.

Jack Vales (Jon Briddell), his wife Melissa (Erin Coker) and their son Nathan (Hayden Byerly) move into a new neighborhood. Besides a bit of a work to do in the house and a cooky old neighbor (Madonna Magee), things seem pretty good. That's until some mysterious goings-on begin happening around the house and in the neighborhood involving quite a few of the residents. Even Nathan isn't his usual self.


You got to have low expectations with a movie like 11/11/11 because that's the only way you'll get out with your sanity intact. That being said, maybe I set my expectations too low because I didn't think 11/11/11 was as bad as I thought it would be. It's not a movie that relies heavily on CGI like a lot of The Asylum's ripoffs, so the bad CGI that's super apparent here isn't as much of an issue.

What is at issue here though is the script. Kiff Scholl and Keith Allan have managed to create exactly zero surprises, zero scares and also seem to handicap their parent characters with inexplicably bad decision making. You have to wonder about the ability of Jack Vales to be a father when he finds his son unconscious on the floor with rat blood on his hands. He just washes his hands and puts him to bed. No doctor visit to see if something is wrong? That ain't right dude. Not to mention pretty much ignoring the creepy old lady neighbor trying to kidnap your son right in front of you.

I think that if you zoom out a bit and look at the story as a whole, it's not that bad and could've been OK. Could've been is the key word here. It's just badly executed as a devil cult horror story and man do they ever hammer that number 11 as much as they can. The number ends up having no effect in terms of the movie's creepiness when it's really supposed to. There's hardly any sort of build up to the date 11/11/11 and when we're actually there, it's nothing special. It's failings as a horror movie are also pretty disappointing because it's not scary or creepy in any way. In fact, it's pretty much comical in certain instances.

The only actor who sort of proves his worth is main guy Jon Briddell. At least he doesn't embarrass himself anyway. The same can't really be said about anyone else. There are some pretty awkward scenes between different groups of actors that can be pretty painful to watch. I guess it could've been worse but it certainly could've been better too. 

The low budget of 11/11/11 shows when it comes to the soundtrack as well as the minor CGI. It's not a major quibble as it is with other The Asylum productions as I said before but it's still hard to watch at times. There are also some minor goofs that are pretty apparent as well as some rushed looking cinematography which is to be expected. The goal here for a movie like this is to film and film quickly to keep costs down.

So how bad is 11/11/11? Well it's pretty bad. Bad enough to make you wonder why you're watching it in the first place. I still believe it's better than I thought it would be though. Funnily enough, it's not that much worse than the real 11-11-11. Yes of course the production values are far better in 11-11-11, but the film still has some major failings of its own. The typical problems of The Asylum are still there in 11/11/11 and I'm sure it will be the cause of anger from ticked off movie watchers who mistakenly thought they were getting a real movie and not some tiny-budgeted ripoff. Got to be prudent now guys.
